Kirsten Dirksen and Nicolás Boullusa run an incredible YouTube channel —
with videos and editing by Kirsten.Their output is phenomenal — 2-3 videos per week these days, total of over 1100, of which maybe 90% are on all manner of shelter: tiny homes, rolling homes, domes, living in cities, living off-grid…. For anyone who likes the sort of things we publish in our building books, here are carefully curated moving images of a great variety of homebuilt shelter solutions.
They have almost 2 million Youtube followers, and some of the videos have been viewed 10-20-30 million (!) times.
Nine years ago, Kirsten published a video on Lesley and me titled “Lloyd Kahn on his NorCal self-reliant half-acre homestead,“ which has had over 800,000 views and over 800 comments.
Recently Kirsten and Nico returned and now have posted the below video. I’m sort of thrilled and definitely honored.

At 89, Shelter legend Lloyd Kahn has built his own homes for over 6 decades: domes, towers, & other handmade stuff. After documenting the DIY homes of readers in his books, Lloyd shares tips on SuperAging & how to self-build today despite the challenges.
@lloyd.kahn keeps leading by doing, inspiring us all as he documents his endeavors: 🛹 👨🌾 🛖 💪 !
Back in 1971, Lloyd purchased his current half-acre homestead in Bolinas, California, for $6,000, with permits costing just $200, and he made use of salvaged and recycled materials—a feat he acknowledges would be challenging to replicate today. Despite modern builders’ hurdles, Kahn has advice and inspiration for anyone hoping to follow in his footsteps.
Last year, Kahn lost his long-time partner in homesteading and wife, Lesley Creed, who shared his vision and helped shape their self-sufficient lifestyle. Her spirit and influence are still deeply felt on the Bolinas homestead, where her contributions remain woven into the fabric of their lives’ work.
After 5,762 posts and over 13K comments, Lloyd announced in his blog on May 18, 2024, that he was switching his blog over to Substack, where he’s titled his ever-rolling enterprise Live from California with Lloyd Kahn. He defines what he will cover there as follows:
“Building, gardening, adventures, travel, people, surfing, skateboarding, fitness, aging, art, architecture, Baja, music, books, tiny homes, rolling homes, the natural world.”
Lloyd will turn 90 in April and plans to still be skateboarding and road-tripping in his Tacoma 4×4 truck.
Watched it as soon as it came out. A wonderful video of a wonderful person by wonderful creators. Been following along with Kirsten and Nico for years. Been following Lloyd and Lesley for even longer. You are all inspirational.
How have I missed this?? Love it! I have to admit though the I am bad at social media. So many cool people doing cool things it’s hard to keep up haha!
