Oh, as a Latin American, I confirm: hearing a foreigner speaking Spanish warms my heart. I'd guess that could be applied to other places too? Thank you for this beautiful post!
Really nice. Mexico, fantastic. Regarding growth, I've just discovered Paulo Soleri and his utopian solutions for managing growth. Not sure exactly what to think of his ideas. I wonder if Lloyd has read about him or been to Arcosanti in Arizona?
We drove from LA to Baja two years ago and it was wonderful. Spoke to Mexicans and frequented local places on the way. Cabo is beautiful although getting more popular we must share it. Thanks for your writings. I admire you.
We've made Baja our home since 2017, usually half the year but this last summer I stayed and worked with a guy I hired to build our new off grid home on our homestead, Rancho Sueño Azul. We're in La Ventana which is hugely popular in the winter with a large community of Canadian and American windsurfers, kite boarders and wing foilers, also free divers and spearfishers. These gringos like to party but are primarily here for the active sporting life and more often than not are in bed at 9 pm, what we call Baja midnight. It's a respectful and super fit group of yearly residents and visitors with many of us seniors, not your Cabo crowd! Lots of young urban Mexicanos are moving here to pursue the artistic and sporting life, we have the best Farmer's market in Baja! There's no place we'd rather be, these people are our tribe.
Yes, a lot of houses are being built since the Covid year but La Ventana retains the small fishing town atmosphere and the rural feel, especially in summer es muy tranquilo. I'm sitting here right now a half kilometer above the town, high above the Sea of Cortez under the starlight in complete peace and quiet and surrounded by the natural landscape. It's going to be a few years before the houses get up here...

Wonderful post! Enjoy!

I like your subtitle in this post. Glad you revisited the place and it paid off this time despite the recent events close to home.
Made it down to Baja myself. Watching my daughter, not yet a teenager, standing up on a longboard was worth the 23 hour drive…
